Museums are the cathedrals of our secular times, and in Tangshn ashowcase was commissioned by local authorities to celebrate the discovery oftwo pre-historic human skulls. In China today, surviving fragments of ancienttimes are eagerly exploited for their tourist potential, and the TangshanGeopark National Museum is a product of the drive to bring culture andeducation to the masses.

A more spacious and accessible site was carefully chosen to give agreat opportunity for the success of this project. The location is one of greatnatural beautiful landscape environment, an hour’s drive from the provincial capital of Nanjing. Mountains conceal anearby town and the hotels that are clustered around its famous hot springs. Itis also near the cave where the bones of Homo erectus Nankinensis were found, and a scattering of bright stones that (according to local legend) cascadedfrom the sky.

The program called for an archeological and historical museum, with twin theaters, research facilities and a playground for children. Afive-level building was created that seems to grow organically from thehillside slope, its sweeping curves extending the natural topography of thesite and the mountains beyond. The façade was to have been clad in GRC louvermembers, which intimate the quality of locally quarried stone,. Tis designstrategy successfully blends the new design museum into its surroundmountainscape.

Windows are screened with a GRC brise de soleil, and theexhibition areas occupy the front part of the building, with service areas tothe rear. The client asked that the lecture theater be given a prominentposition, and this is contained within a concrete blob in remarkable red color, emerging from the façade.

The interior of the museum offers a thrilling architecturalpromenade that flows around a vertiginous, sky-lit atrium and the result isvery fluid. One could liken the experience to a stream flowing between rocks,in continuous fluid motion.
